Introduction
The Kirkman DNA Project covers the surname Kirkman & variations Kerkman; Kirchman; Kirkeman; Kirkmann; Korkman; Krikman; Kyrkeman; Kyrkman
Objectives
The main objective is to link together branches of our family that cannot otherwise be linked due to lack of documented genealogical records. A secondary goal is to determine the number of unique (i.e. not connected) lines that exist.
Perhaps you are stuck in your genealogical research, or have got back so far that you cannot make further discoveries? Participating is an opportunity to uncover information not provided in the paper records, which may help with your family history research. We will also discover which family trees are related. By joining the project, you also may find that the conventional research done by others is of benefit to you. Already, many participants have found out new information about their line – some going back to the fifteenth century!
The Basics of DNA Testing
To be able to take a DNA test, you will need to take a sample of your DNA. This is simple, and it involves taking a swab from the inside of your cheek using a kit like the one . Everything you need is included in the kit, which is described in more detail here .
The most useful test is for the direct male Kirkman line is Y-DNA. This test tells you about your direct male line, which would be your father, his father, and so on back in time. You must be male to take this test, and should have the Kirkman surname. If you believe there is a Kirkman in your direct male line, although you have a different surname, you are also welcome to participate. If you are female, you will need to find a direct line male in your family tree to participate and represent your tree. We recommend males who join to order the 37 or 67 marker Y-DNA tests (see The Cost below).
Both males and females may also be interested in learning about their direct female line, which would be their mother, their mother’s mother, and back in time. Only women pass on mtDNA to their daughters. mtDNA can also help identify sisters when there is a direct female line down from the two target sisters. For mtDNA pricing, see The Cost below
All the DNA test results contain no personal information, and you will match or be a close match to those to whom you are related.
Family Finder DNA Test
The Family Finder test is for both males & females, and can find your cousins of either gender. Also it can help adoptees find their roots. You can discover connections to descendants of all sixteen of your great-great-grandparents! The Family Finder test will not only open avenues for traditional research but may help you discover the hidden connections that could explain your family’s migrations. For Family Finder pricing, click here. This type of test is also provided by Ancestry (see here), called an autosomal test. If you have already tested with Ancestry (or do test in future), you can transfer your results to FTDNA FREE, and so get further matches from their very large database! For mtDNA tests (see The Cost below)
